There are many great things about working on a farm. You get to spend most of your days outside, soaking up the sunshine, surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and sounds. With sweat dripping down your nose as you seed, plant, or harvest there is always a sense of pride and accomplishment because growing food and nourishing others is no easy feat. Farming can feel so far removed from the process of eating even though we eat everyday. By sharing the farm we can help bridge that gap for many different people. Farming has a way of making you feel more connected. More connected to the place you’re in, the people around you, and the food you eat. To me, this connection and sharing this beautiful place with others is one of the very best parts of the job.
Working with the Flourishing Farmers program recently has given me that very special opportunity. By opening up the world of farming to these kids, I had the pleasure of watching them explore and connect with a place I hold very dear to me. Whether it be Dinosaur lookout with Eddie, or even getting him to eat a veggie or two, or running in the irrigation sprinklers or washing vegetables with Ciaran, or picking strawberries and spinach with Max, it was special to help facilitate and see each child connect with the farm in their own way. The more we got to know the students we were able to come up with activities we thought they would enjoy, and it was incredible to watch them have fun and learn. All in all, I very much enjoyed sharing the farm with these amazing students. This experience has further solidified my love for farming and sharing all its wonders.
