Reflecting on a First Season of Farming

By Bryce Harter

Starting my first experience in farming, I truly did not know what to expect. My time spent at Harlem Valley Homestead this season has proved to me some of the best things in life come from embracing the unknown, and living for the experience. This farm truly makes you want to dedicate serious time to learning their practices,  as well as give back to the community. The farm is heavily team oriented, between “Team Work Tuesdays”, full farm team lunches, and our festive seasonal parties, it really does feel great being part of such a supportive team with a thoughtful future ahead.

The field work makes the experience all the more real. Having both crops and livestock duties makes us feel like one big team opposed to two. The timeline of seeding our crops to watching them slowly grow and get sold at our market overtime has got to be some of the most fulfilling moments for me! Joining this farm I was truthfully blown away by how extensive our produce selection is, and it is a real sight seeing how well they are presented at our market set up. The crops crew lifestyle on this farm makes me want to show others our tips and tricks, while our livestock side of operations never ceases to win me over with our incredible animals and how beautiful the pastures are. The minute I saw the land for myself I knew this was the right job for me, as the land and conditions were clearly managed with care. The knowledge and experience I have learned from this farm has been something I will hold on to for years to come, and I hope you all have a chance to visit and support our farm in the future!
